Hello. Hi, how are you? I'm good. How are you? I'm good. One week ago today we ran 10 miles. Can you believe that? I really can't. It feels like it was like yesterday, but then also like six weeks ago. I know. I know. It's crazy. Which is. I wish we were there right now. I know. Not necessarily for the running, but for the vacationing. Just to be there on vacation. I know. I know. It was a rude, a rude re-entry for me too, because I didn't get sick, which I have the past like couple trips afterwards. But I didn't get sick after, so that's great. But I also did not build in a buffer day. No. Like I got back to my house at like nine o'clock at night and then had to be at the I didn't go to the gym. I knew it that was the wrong call. So I didn't go to the gym in the morning. But I mean I still had to be at work the next morning.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I had a pretty busy week. So it was like just straight through with no break. So I've been sleeping like half the day every day this weekend. Oh wow. Nice. I know I'm yawning. I know I'm also tired. We had kind of a big day Friday. It was my it was Cooper's eighth birthday, as you know. So we went to the zoo, which was very fun. And then yesterday we had you guys over for cake. Which was so nice. It was so nice. The kids played so nicely together. It was like a very nice afternoon evening. Yeah, they did a big job. And um, yeah, today I've just been doing some stuff around the house. The baby got me up at 5 30, which was a bummer. Um, but that's okay. But fresh, he's awfully cute, so we will forgive him. And um, yeah, I've been kind of switching um gears into cruise mode now. I was watching some Disney Witch content this morning on YouTube, um, because that's the next trip I was texting um with my sister-in-law about um dining for that trip because that's actually coming up next week, which is crazy. Crazy. Um, yeah, kind of thinking ahead now, which is bonkers. I am also kind of thinking ahead because I did a thing. What did you do? I booked a Disney cruise. Can you say that on the podcast? My kids don't listen to this. Are you sure? Ellie used to listen to this. She doesn't listen to anything that I do or say at this point in the game. When and where? January 11th. And it's on The Wish from Port Canaveral.

SPEAKER_02

Amazing.

SPEAKER_01

It's something I've been wanting to do forever. I have a ton of DCL clients happening over the summer and in the fall. So it just feels like professional responsibility. To check it out. Just check it out. The deal they're running right now is bonkers, especially it's definitely it's hard if you're going a peak week. So, like as soon as it dropped, I went and I checked all my clients. I have a lot of people doing school vacations. So, like there's some stuff where it there's just no way, but yeah, you have some flexibility on when you you go. Um, yeah, pretty crazy. So there's some good deals. What's um, what are you doing? The kids' 50% off deal? Yeah, yeah, because it goes up to age 17. So it's not like Disney World where you're an adult at 10. Right, right. Um, but yeah, it's it's gonna be a secret and we'll tell the kids at Christmas. Amazing. It won't be a long lead time because yeah, we have some fear of boats. Okay, so good to just rip that bandit right off. Yeah. Yeah. We couldn't really make use of that deal because it requires two full-paying adults, and we are at the point where we would need two staterooms, like an adult in each stateroom. So we we would not be able to really utilize that one, unfortunately, because we have so many kids. And there's you know, there's also been some stuff where like on some cruises it's not for verandas, or yeah, there's like there's definitely there's fine print. Um, yes. And they did release they did release discounts for our cruise finally, which is crazy. Um, but it is as of right now, there's no veranda rooms available, so we're not gonna jump on it for right now. We'd have to cancel and rebook. Um, would still save money doing that, but right now we're thinking it's not enough of a savings to bother with that. If by some chance, like a veranda room popped up, maybe we'd rethink it. But for right now, I just feel like you guys you enjoyed your veranda so much. It was our most favorite thing about the cruise. Yeah, we we were out there from the moment we woke up until we went to bed, basically. Yeah. Um, it would be a very different trip to not have our veranda. Yeah. Um, yeah. So what are we gonna talk about today? We thought it would be a good idea to just kind of do a little trip recap. We did our on the goes. Sorry that one of them like posted out of order and I can't fix it without like deleting the episodes and then changing everything. So I'm leaving it where it is. Um, but I'm also going to so today is Sunday. This will this episode now will release on Friday. I am for Tuesday of this week going to put our handful of on the go episodes into one episode just as a little bonus for Tuesday, and that will be in the right order. So if you're somebody who likes to listen all the way through instead of to little bites, that's gonna be available this week. Awesome. Um, which is fun. But yeah, we thought we should just kind of recap the trip in particular, focusing on the run and kind of like how it went, what we'd changed, what surprised us, that kind of thing. Okay, let's do it. Well, we flew down on Thursday. I am so glad we were able to change to the earlier flight. I think we would have gotten off on the wrong foot if we had gotten to our hotel at like midnight that night. Totally, totally. Um, yeah, we were able to do that for free on JetBlue, which was great. Um, and so that way we landed at what like was this like 6 30-ish, 7 o'clock instead of um 10 30 p.m.? Right. That's great. Wait, I forget. Did we have a notes app for this one? Um I do, but it's like very sketchy. Okay, I can look at it as we go. Um this was a week ago, and I like barely remember what happened. I know, I know. Um, the boarding process was really weird. Like everything was very stressful and chaotic. I don't know why that was. That was very strange. Um, but it was a good flight. It was a bummer that our luggage took so long. Um yeah. And I actually went back and looked at my notes from our September trip, um, my September trip with the kids. It also took over an hour um jet blue in Terminal C that day as well. I feel like the moral of the story is try not to check a bag. Yeah, unless you absolutely have to. Which, you know, I mean, when it's just us and it's just a couple days is yeah, doable, but you were like also going to Ohio, like there were additional logistics this time. So that is fine. Um Okay, and let's see. So we stayed at the All-Star movies, which we kept forgetting which one we were at, but that is the one. If you're saying there, keep in mind if you take Ubers or minivans, it consistently directed them to all-star music instead over and over and over. So just make sure you tell your driver that it's actually um movies that you're headed to. Yeah, every every lift we took, I think that happened, um, which was so strange. And like we could see that it was turning into the wrong one. So we'd be like, oh, wait, it's not this one. They're like, no, no, it's gotta be another. No, nope, it really isn't. I promise. We've done this like four times already, which was so weird. That was weird. We'll do a deeper dive on like a whole episode on the hotel itself. Spoiler alert, I was pleasantly surprised in many ways. Um, number one of which I think was the food court. Yeah, me too. Yeah, the food was really good. They had a really good variety. We had salmon the first night. Salmon and a lot of things. It was not really good. Actually, good. Yeah. Yep. So that was definitely a pleasant surprise. I was pleasantly surprised by the hotel in general. Like, I mean, you know, we had stayed at pop, but like I haven't really spent much time at a value resort in a very long time. And you know, if if doing the value resort makes it possible for you to take the trip, it's nice.

SPEAKER_00

It's not it, it was a nice hotel.

SPEAKER_01

It was, you know, pretty bare bones, but like plenty of space. Yeah. Um, I loved that the they had the double lock-off on the bathroom. So there's a door for the room that has the shower and the toilet in it, and then there's also a door for the vanity that's open to the room otherwise. So, like if you're traveling with little kids and you're trying to get ready without waking them up or something like that. Easy peasy. They do have elevators as well, so yeah. You know, which you know, some of the some of the resorts of that height don't. Um and we were in a great location. We were near the pool, but we were on the back side, so it wasn't noisy. No noise. That was great. Yeah. Um, we had to call down for uh like guest services a couple times, like we ran out of coffee cups, but like everything arrived promptly.

SPEAKER_00

Like everything was great.

SPEAKER_01

Um so yeah, um one thing I didn't love, and I don't know if this is true at the other hotels either, and I want to look it up, the other values I mean, is that the pool does not have a bathroom. Right, right, you had to go into the main lobby building for the bathroom. Yeah, and the very bars outside the gate of the pool. So, kind of if you're dealing with like lots of kids who won't go to the bathroom at the same time, and you have to go back and forth a whole bunch through the lobby, which I didn't love, but um, you know, other than that, poo is nice, not a lot of shade, but you know, pretty like very serviceable, so not a bad option. I was I was pleasantly surprised. So our first park day was Friday when we hit Magic Kingdom. Here's the thing like conventional wisdom would say we probably should have done less park time before the race. Less steps. We meant to do all wisdom would say that. Most of the far fewer steps, we did over 20k steps on Friday, and then we did about 17,000 steps on Saturday, and the race was Sunday. That said, I mean, Disney vacations they cost a lot of money, they take up valuable vacation time. I don't think I'm ever gonna be the person that goes down for a race and is able to fully take it easy beforehand. I just don't think I have it in me. I'm also just not sure it would have made a difference. I guess if I was trying to like, if I was trying to like really win the race, you know what I mean? Like if I was trying to do like a personal best record or yeah, if I was serious about it in any way, yeah, maybe I could see like being pre-fatigued could be detrimental. Yeah. But like honestly, we're we're amateurs, we're in this for a good time. And I don't think having done that amount of walking previously made any difference in how the race went through at all. And like I wasn't sore when we first got up Sunday morning, like before the race. I wasn't like sometimes at Disney I get up and I'm like, oh boy, I am broken before the day has even begun. Right. But um, I didn't feel like that. We did we were really good about hydrating um in the days leading up to the race, and we tried really hard to stay out of the sun as much as we could. It's hard because it was hotter than we expected. Um, so I feel like that definitely helped. Yeah, for sure. Yeah, if you're hesitating to go, I mean, for a Run Disney race, if you were doing one of the challenges and getting up at 2:30 in the morning, like three days in a row, that's probably a different story. But like for one day, I felt totally fine going into the race, having you know our usual Disney thing for the day. Yeah, for sure. For sure. No, I agree. We had a wonderful slow morning at Magic Kingdom. We really did slow down that morning. We did the people mover, we kind of meandered around. It was very relaxing, I thought. No, totally agreed. The park also felt very empty that particular day. So that was a bonus. Yeah, that was pretty amazing. Yeah, at one point, I think I shared it in a story someplace, but at one point I like took a video and there was no one around us near. Like we were near Pirates, there was like nobody there. Granted, the ride was down, but there's other rides there, and it was like empty, empty. Yeah, and we showed up for beacon barrel, what, 30 or 40 minutes early because we planned to do the ride first and it was down. Um, and they got us in within less than five minutes, no problem, which was great. Yeah, that was great. I really loved sitting at the bar at Beacon Barrel. That was cool, yeah. To see the get a better view of all the interactions and stuff. Yeah, no, I liked that a lot. Um, what did you think of Tiana's? It was your first time.

SPEAKER_00

Um, you know, it's cute. I can ride it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, okay. I don't like it, but I can ride it. And it's kind of worth it.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

You know what I mean? I think at one point I called it living with the land, but worse. But like then later, because it's like a big garden, you're just floating through this garden, but then it's gonna toss you off a cliff. Yeah, I didn't get like a story out of it at all, but like it is pretty and it's kind of fun towards the end. It is pretty, yeah, for sure. It was more drops than I remember it being. Like in my head from childhood, which is the last time I have been on Splash Mountain, I'd stopped going on it because I really didn't like it. Um in my head, there was like one very wimpy drop, and then one like pirates level drop, and then the big drop. So, like, yeah, after that that kind of happened, I thought like the big drop was any minute the rest of the ride. So I was kind of like paralyzed by fear. But I think like if I go on it again, I'll absorb more of the scenery and the animatronics and all that stuff. Yeah, it is nice when you're falling, you're not falling into those spiky looking death trees like they used to have on Slash Mountain. That's the Briar Patch. Death the Briar Patch. Oh my gosh. What did you think? It was also your first time at Trader Sam's. What did you think? I didn't like it as much as Beacon Barrel. It was very subdued in there. Like I remember it being a little rowdier, not in a bad way, but like a lot more like antics and things like that when I went there before. I don't know if it was because it was midday. Um, I'm not really sure what it was, but the vibe was definitely a lot more subdued than the last time I was there. I don't think the drinks were that good. They were very sugary. Yeah. So I didn't mind I didn't mind being sat with other people at all. Like it's kind of fun to like small talk random with randos about their trip. But um I think maybe we were not the right vibe for the first folks we sat with, but had we stayed longer, I think we could have made best friends with the second grid for sure. Yes, they were so it's you know, I I enjoy that kind of thing. Yeah. In Disney, probably only, probably everywhere else. I don't want to talk to strangers, but they're um like, all right, yeah, sure, I'd love to chat about your trip. Um and so I didn't mind that at all. And like we saw some of the effects, and that was kind of cool. Yeah, we were in kind of a weird spot for like seeing what happened around the bar, just because it was kind of low seating. But um, the biggest thing is that kind of like ogas, like I love ogas, I love the vibe. I don't mind standing, I don't mind being stuck with other people, I love the like the effects and the theme and all of that. I just the drinks aren't that good. And I feel like at Beacon Barrel, you get all of that theming and the vibe.

SPEAKER_00

And the drinks the drinks are good.

SPEAKER_01

Like those the two drinks that I have gotten twice now, those are hefty beverages. Like you feel like you're getting your money's worth, you're not drinking sugar water. And it's so crazy because like tiki drinks can be really good. The speakeasy here does a tiki night every week, yeah, and like they can be elevated, like spirit forward cocktails, and they are not smell. It's fun, but meh. Yeah, um, I was very pleasantly surprised by the tacos, which we didn't even plan yet. And they they were really good. Yeah, yeah, the food was quite was quite good. I gotta say, I'm a little underwhelmed by the festival. Yes, me too. Big time. The the food uh flower and garden festival. Yeah, we got to try some more things this time. Let's see. I feel like the French toast could have been a much more fun little dish if it hadn't been sitting out, but it definitely would really be very fresh. Yeah, yeah. Uh the drinks kind of seemed a little repetitive to me. A ton of them had um Saint Germain Elderflower in it, which I like, but it I would rather see more variety in the drinks. Yeah, like a lot of them had that. Um, it tastes the same. I know it's flour and gardens, so bees, honey. I get it. Yeah, a lot of honey focused, lots of honey. Yeah, yep, definitely. We didn't get anything to eat that we were like psyched about. Yeah, definitely not. And the I didn't find the drinks super tempting across the board. I'm more of like, I'm more of a margarita, or I'm more of a bourbon, or more of a gin, like right. Just I don't know. A lot of stuff, again, just seems like really sugary. Not really not the vibe for me. As far as the um Run Disney stuff went on Friday, we went to the expo um kind of like late afternoon on Friday. I felt like for us that was a good call because we were not worried at all about like getting merch or anything. We were really just there for our bibs and our shirts, and it was not um very crowded at the time we went, which was good. Everything was, I thought, very well marked. Like at the hotels, they had signs up for all the transportation. Um, with one exception at the poly, it was kind of weird. The woman did not know where to direct us to go for the bus. That was kind of odd, but um, we figured it out. But yeah, once you got there, it was kind of a lot of walking in the direct sun. So you should definitely be prepared for that. But once you got there, it was pretty efficient to you know get the bib, get the shirt, and move on. Oh, well run. Yeah, definitely. Definitely. If you wanted to spend, you know, a couple hours there, you definitely could. I mean, they had this huge expo hall with tons of booths and running apparel and everything. Yeah, we didn't even go into the building that had the Run Disney specific merchandise. So there was another building we completely skipped. So if you wanted to spend some time there, you definitely could. And I had a bunch of bars open too. People were like getting beers and stuff, like yeah, they had a day of it, you know, beers and mimosas and stuff like that. And there were some food places open inside as well. Um, if you do care about merch, you should definitely get there as early as possible on the very first day you can because I heard a lot of complaints from people that merch sold out like ridiculously fast. Yeah. So if that's something you care about, um, you should definitely prioritize getting there early. But if you don't, you can kind of go whenever. And if you go like late afternoon, you might be able to pop in and out like we did. Yeah, yeah, that was great. It was definitely hot in the sun. It reminded me of when um Hollywood Studios was working on the Skyliner and the buses were like all the way out in Siberia, basically. Um yeah, um, once you got in there, it was easy peasy, very well marked, even if you had no idea what you were doing. What an incredible facility. Oh my gosh. Yeah, it's if you haven't been to the wide world of sports, it's like a million different athletic fields, and it's it's really impressive. I can't even imagine how crazy it must be there when there's like a youth event happening. Do they have an ice rink? I don't know. Hockey, are you gonna go watch hockey in the wide world of sports Daniels on the house? Wow, that's crazy. Yeah. Very cute. She's very into hockey because her teacher's sons, her three um like early teenage sons are in competitive hockey, and so she's like obsessed with these three boys. And that's so cute. Uh, at one point, we actually went to one of their games that was local because she kept harassing her, like her teacher would be like teaching math, and she'd be like, Right, when is Wyatt's hockey game? Like, okay, so finally she just sent. Home, like a little paper slip with the game for the weekend written down. So that's why she's into it, which I think is really funny. That is funny. But I was trying to think about is there any child in any sport where I might find myself there as a parent? I don't think so. Right. Oh my gosh. Um let's see. So the race itself, do you want to talk about that? Yes, but before we get to that, um, on Friday night we did dinner at Haleo. Are we saying that right? Am I saying that right? I think it's Haleo. Haleo, it was so good. It was absurdly good. And for the price, we got a ton of food. We did, yeah. Um, but really, there wasn't anything. There was one thing I like didn't love, but it was just because I had like a texture thing. I just kind of wish that would be a really fun grown-up night to do with like the four of us or something. Yeah, the four grown-ups, because I wanted the variety, but it then it was like more too many actually. Yes. So I would love to go with like a larger group and just like get a million things, a little bit of everything. Yeah, the saltful margarita absolutely lived up to the hype. I cannot overstate how perfect it was. Um so that was lovely. Um, I had a great gin and tonic that was very well done. Um I got the wine plate and I wound up writing down the name of one of the wines because I liked it so much and I wanted to be on the hunt for it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So no, that was a real win, even though we had to brave Disney Springs, which is not our favorite. That's not our favorite thing to do at night, especially. Should we do Saturday real quick before we move on to the race? Yes, we should. We should. Okay. Um, Animal Kingdom, lovely morning. Such a nice morning. Lots of just soaking up the vibes, hanging out. We did Everest twice in the single rider line. That was the only ride we did there, right? That was the only ride there, I think. Um, yeah, I think that's true. Yeah. Um I did wish we got sat for nomad in the regular bar area. We were sat with maybe like overflow seating for Tiffins. Yeah. Um, which is the vibe wasn't the same, but it was okay. The the cocktail was really good. The our winner was great. Um, and I liked the the cheese board we got. It was just the the vibe in the like regular restaurant seating area is just kind of off. Yeah, and it was kind of empty where we were sitting, so just like I don't know, didn't have like the usual buzz, you know. Right, right. But no, so good. Yeah, Geo82 was great as always. Oh man, that crab cake yes was incredible. Really, really good. What did you think of Via Napoli? We were sort of dead on our feet by the time we got there. We were very tired. It was fine. It was fine. It was fine. We had a little bit of a negative, not an interaction, but there was a dad at a table behind us with a child who was adorably like a to like a young toddler, or baby even, who was like adorably squealing. In a high chair, like a very small child, yeah, like a like a like a like a you know what, like a nine-month-old, ten-month-old, you know what I mean? A little person in a tiny high chair, and the dad lost it on the baby, yeah. And then kind of at the real world, yeah. Um if you've never been to Vienna Napoli, not that it would ever be okay to do that anyway, but like it's a pretty loud restaurant as it is. It's got like really high ceilings, and there's tons of other kids making noise, like she was adorable. And he yelled at the baby, and it was very uncomfortable.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I have had a hard time not interacting with away. I know, I know. Yeah, that was a bummer. Um, so that honestly, that kind of colored my like via Napoli experience. Yeah, but the food was fine. I don't even remember what I got to drink. It was it was all fine. Yeah, we were pretty beat by then too. It was like it was really hot out. Yeah, you know, yes. We had stopped, we were that we got there kind of late, um, which wasn't a problem, but we had stopped. Um, we didn't want to miss La Cava and we were running a little late, so we popped in there for a drink before dinner. So we got to dinner a little later than we went to, and um wait, this is really funny about La Cava. So while you went, I think you maybe went out to go to the bathroom. Yes, and still left me at the table. So we were again like we're at a table with other people we didn't know. There was a group of like four or five people who were all together down one end of our table, and then I was down at the other end of the table, but it's a small space, right? So we're at that table together.

SPEAKER_00

And you left to go to the bathroom, and all of a sudden, these guys came in.

SPEAKER_01

What I need the baby is turfing at us. What are you doing? You run out of Bubba, I'm so sorry. Yeah, the those guys came in and they were very rowdy, and like just like swooped into our table and like took your spot, and they had chips and stuff, and like I was kind of like, What's going on? And they were like, It's the D3 Club, it's the D3 Club, and like who wants a coin? Are you in the club? And I was like, I'm not in any clubs, I would never join a club. What are you talking about? Like, this very, very strange. And like the people down the other end of the table were kind of like, Yeah, sure, I guess we'll take a coin. Well, no, it turns out they're like a huge thing, they're the Disney day drinkers, and they're like a whole Facebook internet like thing. Okay, give go around giving out these coins, and that's who like took your spot at our table. Thankfully, they left before I had to get argumentative with some drunk men. Oh my gosh. Like, that is my sister's spot.

SPEAKER_00

We earned this table, yes, and we will be moving on. I don't want your coin, I don't understand it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and then that was funny. I probably got to bed by 10 Saturday, which was a little later than I meant to, but not a big deal. And then our alarm went off at 2 30 on Sunday morning. You were already up, weren't you? I I had a hard time falling asleep. Yeah, I tend to especially during the week. I tend to be up until around midnight. I just I have too little time to myself, right? I tend to, after the kids go to bed, like find a second life and then like sleep a lot later than I should. I'm constantly exhausted, it's not good for me, but that's where we're at.

SPEAKER_00

And so I had a hard time falling asleep before midnight any night that um so I was up late and then I was just like weirdly kind of nervous.

SPEAKER_01

Not like nervous, but just kind of like what are we doing? What is this idea that we're like what's it gonna be like?

SPEAKER_00

And is it gonna totally be a bummer? Like if I can't finish. Right. No running. What am I doing here?

SPEAKER_01

So I was kind of like, I'm stressed. Um yeah, so I was actually up earlier than I think I needed to be up at 2 30, and I wound up just giving up and getting up at 2. So I was on almost no sleep. Yeah. Uh at that point. Yeah, I got up, my alarm went off at 2.30. We had laid everything out the night before, so just kind of quickly got dressed. I was very nervous about like the logistics, just having never done it before. You know, I had read through the event guide, which was really detailed, but still until you're there, you can't really picture it, you know. So I was like, just like how, you know, what are the lines gonna be like? How long is bag check gonna take? Um, but everything again, just like the expo, was very organized, lots of signage, lots of people directing the volunteer, totally so everything ran really smoothly. We got on a bus right away.

SPEAKER_02

Um, when we have full.

SPEAKER_01

No, and they took off right away and drove, which was great. Yeah. Um, and we got in retrospect, things that I would like maybe do a little bit differently is the food.

SPEAKER_00

Was it necessary to try to prep the bagels on a moving bus, or could we maybe have done that in advance before leaving our room? Like, I think maybe even potentially, potentially, if you're gonna roll up with the full brunch, maybe you prep that before you leave your room. That's a good idea. Hey, this bagel like rolls down the aisle. It was like, what are we like doing?

SPEAKER_01

Yes, that is true. That is true. We could have handled that differently, a little bit differently. But yeah, you get there and you come in like by the um and by the entrance to Epcot, you go through security, and then it's it's a hike over to the start line. I but before we started the race, we had done about 3,000 steps towards this race. Like this feels like part of it, right? But it wasn't. It wasn't, it wasn't part of it. Year check was super quick. They give you a clear plastic bag at the expo to pack your gear in, but uh, they had extras there. So if you forget it, no big deal. And you just grab a Sharpie and write your number on it, yeah, and bring it up, drop it off super quick and easy. And they give you a sticker that you can put on the back, on like the back of your um race bib that tells you like the number of like what truck you were at. Right. You don't have to remember it. Which is good. And they did have a handful of food trucks out. The lines for those were I don't know how long they took. There were maybe 10 or so people in line for the food trucks. So um, if you did want to get, you know, coffee or food there, um, you could do that. We were really hustling. We wanted to get straight to our corral and stake out a spot because we wanted to get that head start over the balloon ladies as much as humanly possible. Which honestly kind of saved us, I think. That was the right thing for sure. And I think we could have been even further forward in our corral if we had known the way the crowd was gonna flow. Yeah, it's kind of like you know how when you're getting on Guardians and like there are people who know which doors are gonna open when. Yes, it's kind of like that, and we didn't know that about the way the crowd was gonna move from the corral, like into the chute and all of that. So yeah. Um and if you are prone to claustrophobia, be prepped for that because that was very a bit of a crash. Yeah, you really get squished in there. Um, I think if we had wanted to be like throwing elbows a little bit, we easily could have been in the first wave of our corral. So each corral has a number of waves in it. I think A and B only maybe had three or so waves each. And then the and then as they got to like E, B, E, and F, there were, I don't know, six or more waves per corral. So they set people off like in several minute increments, so it's not a huge crush. Um, so basically, as you're moving into like the shoot for the start line, someone comes across with like a um a rope and blocks off the waves. So I think if we had just wanted to take like a step forward, we could have been at the back of um wave wave one, but we stayed at the front of wave two, which was fine. Yeah. Um, but yeah, it is it is a good 10 to 15 minutes of like really being crushed in there. Really, really. Even before that, though, I was surprised by how early everybody in F started standing up. Yes. Um, I I I honestly was nervous initially, it's like before the race, I was nervous about how I would maintain any adrenaline when like you get there and then you sit on the pavement for like a long time. Yeah. Um, so number one, like do your stretching early for sh like earlier than you might think. If I had waited as long as I thought that I I saw other people stretching, so I was like, all right, I'm gonna go do that. Thank God that I did also. My hips were absolutely screaming after that run, and yeah, I'm very careful about them. So like I'm glad that I took the time to do it when I saw other people doing it. But if you're thinking I'm gonna stretch right before we get going, like that's not happening. So then I also was thinking it would be a good idea to bring um like a reusable tote that you don't care about losing. Um for all the stuff you're dealing with, but like your breakfast stuff, your like fuel pack, like the water bottle you put the like after you drop your gear bag, something that's I felt like a plastic bag was like not quite as sturdy as I wanted it to be with all the junk you were like getting rid of. So I feel like something like a disposable tote that you get at like the Walmart or whatever that you can toss would be a good idea to have with you in addition to the gear bag. Um for like as you eat your bagel or whatever. Um because I didn't get rid of my plastic bag until the very last second because getting over to the trash became impossible. Thing. Yeah. So like having something that wasn't like a stretchy handle would have been good. Yeah. Um so basically we were in our spot in the corral by I think it was like 3 45. Yeah. And then and there's music pumping, it's very exciting. Not boring at all. Not boring at all. I the time really went by fast. And then at 4 15, they start a pre-show, which is basically they have different um speakers, and I haven't looked up like what they're I don't know if they're like famous in the running community, I'm not really sure. Um, but they had people that like went through the corrals and like talked to people about like their stories and why they were running and everything like that. Can I be honest? Yes, I could have done without the inspirational stories. Yeah, some of them were a little dark, dark. I saw some people on Reddit were um commenting on that. They're like, that was like a lot of that was a lot. I felt like it could have used some content warnings. Um I also don't I just don't I don't like I know it was a feelings race. I know I don't need feelings to do the running thing. I like the I like the like if you start you've already won. Like I like that kind of stuff. I liked all of that, but like I I don't like to I don't like to tear up, you know? I'm not really into that. That's not for me. No. Uh if at all possible. I much preferred like the pump up music that they were playing for the first half hour. Like that was I thought fun and had me funny entertained and everything. Oh no. Um at me. He wants the he wants the phone. He's getting very you want to hang out with Auntie. You want to be on the podcast. Um, I did feel like we timed our food pretty well. Like I felt like we ate enough. I ate enough and I had myself dressed at exactly the right time, and like that carried me through for a while, and then that meant that like we wound up eating that disgusting fuel gunk at exactly the right moment, and that kind of got me to the end of it. Like, I felt like we timed that pretty well for people who did not research what to do. Yeah, I wish I had brought actually um one more goo because I I was hungry for something toward the end, and I don't like eating something for the very first time on the course. So, like they were handing out those honey stingers. Um which was basically just straight up sugar. They were so sugary, and I was wishing I had one more goo instead, but I ate them. I could have used a second, I could have used a second Celsius, yeah. Around like mile six six or seven. I think that would have been good, but it's carbonated and we running with it, so I don't know how that works. Um, yeah, so people in our corral started standing um around 445, but we didn't start the race until six.

SPEAKER_00

They started standing as soon as A went.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, as soon as A started, um, because the race kicked off at five. And when it first kicked off, I was like, oh man, we're gonna start a lot earlier um than we thought because the the waves were going off so quickly, but it definitely slows down as they get to the later corrals. Yeah. Um, because the corrals are just bigger. But yeah, so we just kind of stood and then you sort of inch forward, you know, a couple of things. It's this weird, like it's this weird like shuffle forward in a hurry. Like everyone's shuffling, but you can't really take a full step because there's too many people around you. So there would be like a shuffle, shuffle, shuffle, shuffle, hold, shuffle, shuffle, shuffle. I feel like a penguin. Yes, and it was kind of hard to stay together too. And then it was hard to like watch uh people's feet, but then also know where you were going because you don't want to step on someone, you know? Right. That's a special skill. And then you do like basically a U-turn to get into like the part that faces the start line. And so that corner was rough. That corner was rough, and you we could see the balloon ladies at the back as we like rounded that corner. So I was like, okay, there they are. So I knew we had a pretty good start on them to begin with. Um, I had signed up. If you just Google like Run Disney Balloon Lady tracking, there were um there were a couple of different ways to track where they were at, um, which I found helpful because it made me just feel less stressed knowing like exactly how much time we had on them. Um we started with, I don't know, 15 to 20 minutes on them, like just over a mile. And then by the end, I think they probably finished maybe like a quarter mile behind us. Um, so our lead definitely like diminished as the race went on, which we kind of figured it would. So it was good that we started with like that big of a lead. Yeah. Um yeah. And then so for each wave, they do a quick five, four, three, two, one countdown, and then they set off a little thing of fireworks, and then you're off. You're off, and it's a little crowded and clustered right away. But then the people who are faster, they break away like they run away quickly. So yes. Um mile one, I thought flew by so quick. Um, I was I feel like at that point I was still just being like, what is this? What's gonna happen? What's gonna happen? Like what yes, and like it was high away. So I was kind of like and it was still very dark out, but it was completely pitch dark. Yeah. It was kind of like, What is ahead of me? Like, where am I going? I hadn't looked at a map. I mean, you probably knew. I had to I had, I was I had, but on the map, I thought you got into Epcot a lot quicker than you did. You didn't get into Epcot till it was like a mile and a half in, almost two miles. So um, but yeah, then you turn into Epcot. I thought the part around World Showcase was really fun. So far. Um tons of music playing, just really cool to see all of the countries lit up. The sun was starting to come up in the far distance, and like it was just it was pretty, the vibes were good. And it also wasn't crowded. There were a few spots in Hollywood studios and along the boardwalk that got a little tight with people, but in Epcot, there was plenty of space, which was great. Yeah, I know I've been going back and forth about this because well, we'll get to it. But the end of the race if is a lot of highway. Yes, like that second half is a lot of highway. And I couldn't decide, it's like it would it be better to do all highway first and like the parks are like a sweet treat at the end as like a little incentive, or is it like we know there's people who aren't gonna make it past mile four, and we want them to do the parks, so like then we front load, but I definitely found like the high of the beginning, and then you got the parks on top of it, and that was so fun. Yeah, and then you got on the highway, and the sun actually came up, and it was a long highway stretch. Yes, I didn't I did not super love. And then so getting down the boardwalk that was fun because there were some people out cheering us on, which was so cute, very sweet. There was a little boy with a sign who is from our Patreon group, right? Yeah, yeah. It's a you are the magic. Unless it's to us for free, but one we're part of, yeah. Um, the but it did there were some areas down the boardwalk that got very crowded. Um, so that's definitely slowed us down a little bit because you kind of couldn't really pass people at that point. So that was a little tight. And then you got into Hollywood Studios, running through there was really fun. It took you like a route around the park. We were in there a lot longer than I thought. So that was there was a lot of like doubling back no water in Hollywood Studios, so I would definitely bring that my own hydration next time. I don't know if I would wear a backpack or a fuel belt or what, but I would definitely carry my own because I did not love when I got thirsty and did not have um water available. No, I was thinking the same thing. On the one hand, like I don't want to drink too much water, and I had to stop to pee twice in the course of the race. But by the end, I was like, I must pee now. Like so I probably could have gone three times. I do drink an insane amount of water, but just on a regular basis, but yeah, um. Yeah, I no, I agree. I think maybe like a belt with like even just like two eight-ounce bottles of water just as a backup for if you end up in a situation, you know, in between stations, you can just do a little sip and keep going. Right. That would maybe have been the way to go. And then I also could have had an extra Celsius. Especially if you had ice in it because the water at the water stops was warm. I mean, they don't really have a way to keep it cold, but it would be nice if you had like a nice cold water on your back that you could sip from as well. I also I've never had Power Aid before in my life. Yeah, yeah, I don't love it. I mean, it was like a necessary evil at that point, but like I was like, all right, I guess this is a thing I'm trying. Yes, for the first time in this particular moment. So I was surprised just in terms of the race and like how I dealt with it, like physically. Yeah, I A never like I felt like I could keep running more than I realized I would be able to keep running. So that's something. I was really surprised how much my shoulders hurt. Yes. Because I didn't know that I should keep my arms up like a power walking mall lady. Right, right. Until the end, and I was like, my shoulders are actually kind of killing me. And like I knock my shoulders out pretty hefty twice a week. Like I am like they shouldn't, I felt like they shouldn't hurt me, but that just the drag, I think, of the weight of your arms as you're running the whole time that I was really sore in my shoulders and like upper back a little bit. Yeah, me too, by the way, especially toward the end. I was surprised how great we felt till mile five. Like when we hit mile five, we're like, oh my god, are we gonna finish this race? Like, we feel really good. This is amazing. And then miles six through nine were all highway and got like a lot more difficult, I think. Yeah, I felt I felt okay until probably about halfway through mile seven, and then I was like, why did I do this? Yeah. So the highway I thought was difficult, not just because it was a little bit boring and you know, just endless, but they had you go on and off a couple of like the on-ramps or off ramps, and they were not only you know a hill, but they were slanted to the side.

SPEAKER_00

Slant was difficult, filling my hip.

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So that that was difficult. So those miles went by, I thought, pretty slowly. Um, but I still felt pretty good up to like mile eight. I was still feeling like, okay, we're gonna finish this thing. And then I had like a really rough mile where I was like, I don't know if I'm not gonna be able to get swept here because I was like, Oh, there was another, there was another big we had just finished a big incline and we like talked ourselves all the way through it, and then we looked ahead, and there was another one. Yeah, it was like, oh god, must we? Must we but I also feel like I could have pushed harder during those first five miles to get a beggar lead. And yeah, really just trying to pace ourselves to not burn out early. Yeah. Um, so I I feel like that's a good thing to know for next time is like the last couple miles. Next time, she's saying it. Stop it. Stop it.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Um definitely like pushing for the earlier miles when you have the energy and it's new and it's exciting, and you're in the park and like the vibes are all happening, and then knowing you're gonna lose a good amount of that lead on the highway. When this thank God the sun didn't really come out. Yes, that was a big thing. I wouldn't, I would not have done it. Danielle does not do full sun. Yeah, that it would have been hard. I can't imagine. I mean, people who do the marathon, I haven't checked if it starts at the same time. I'm guessing it does, but you've got more than half of the race after sunrise. Yeah, like three quarters of the race after sunrise. That must be tough, really, really tough to get to do. I I mean to do if we do the princess half, it's three more miles in the sun, which is and it's in February, so that I'm sure that's right. Right. Um everyone was making a very big deal about the heat and humidity, and I I honestly I did not, I felt like it was okay actually until just the very end of the race, and then yeah, after the race, there's still so much walking that you have to do. So much walking. Oh my goodness.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean, that was more than a half marathon if you include all that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Um, so after the race, you walk through, you go on under the finish line, and then you walk through like a long fenced-off area um where you get a water, you get your um, they give you a cooling towel, which was much appreciated. They give you a little snack box. Um, and then we took some time to just sort of collapse on the pavement for a little bit. Literally. Which I don't recommend doing because getting back up was impossible. Nope, nope. There's I mean, but there's nowhere to sit. So that's what we should have done. We should have done that. Would have been the right call, but we didn't know, Haley. Yeah. Then you gotta go back to the gear truck. No shade. No. Um, you go to the gear truck, that was very quick. Just grab your bag. I was very glad we had packed um a change of shoes for after because I was desperate to get out of my running shoes. Um, we did get pretty flustered with like our after race plan. Um, for a brief period, we thought we were going to go directly to Epcot and do Guardians and then go to breakfast at Topolino's. Um, then we ended up already. Yes. So we but we could not hobble back to Epcot. I mean, the park place in the parking lot where we were felt very far from the entrance, and we just could not get back there. So we thought we would take a bus somewhere else and then come back to Epcot and be closer to the entrance. This was the wrong idea. This was the wrong choice. We were not thinking clearly. We wound up taking a bus to um Fort Wilderness, and that was the wrong idea. And then on the way there, I was like, wait, I need to eat an enormous breakfast immediately right now. Um, so we wound up pivoting and going, taking an Uber from Fort Wilderness to the Riviera. Um, it was the best. And the man driving that Uber was he was not amused by us. He was dead. He was worried about us. Yes. I also, so okay, so number one, there is no bus to the main park area. So like that's just something to know going forward. Probably could have Googled it, didn't think about it at all. And then I don't even really know where we were finishing this race, so that I wouldn't have had the wherewithal to put that together. But I also think so, like Topolino is is so good. Yes, I don't remember that breakfast.

SPEAKER_00

Like, I think that we probably I think that's a whispering canyon moment.

SPEAKER_01

That's a you go someplace with a skillet that you can just pile food into your face and not feel like you're missing out on a fine dining experience because you're mostly dead. That's true.

SPEAKER_00

Next time we got to choose brunch a little bit differently.

SPEAKER_01

And hopefully, maybe we would stay somewhere that has the food there. So it would have it was hard to have to travel multiple places when we were literally limping. So it would have been good if you know, if we had been staying at the Riviera and could just have breakfast and then go collapse. We were actually joking at we were joking at breakfast. We were like, can we just get a room for the day and just go lay down and do it by the hour? Like, go get in the tub. We did make a really good choice, which was packing different shoes like our flip-flops, yeah, or my sandals in our gear bags. Yeah. Because switching shoes after the race was imperative. That's a non-negash that must be done. Yeah, yeah. Um, I don't think anything has ever hit me harder than that particular legacy mimosa, by the way.

SPEAKER_00

Hayley, I was like nauseous. I I think when right after the race, you were feeling nauseous, it took me a bit, and then my body was like, What have you done? And so we're like, yeah, breakfast, I'm trying to eat.

SPEAKER_01

And I was like, I I'm not sure I'm gonna make it. So I just sat down to my mimosa, and then I was like, uh some cimosa. I'm gonna have the brunch. So we're back to the hotel. That hit me. We literally did not talk during breakfast. It was silent. I was doing the long blink. I was like literally doing the long blink, about to fall asleep in my burnt quiche. I did not have a very good brunch. My food was actually just not that good this time. But like, I was like, am I gonna fall asleep in these like potatoes and salads? What's gonna happen? I don't know. The only talking we did was when the characters would come around and would be like, we can't stand up, we're so sorry. So sorry, thank you for coming by. We shall not, we shall not be standing and we appreciate you, but you can move on now.

unknown

Thank you.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, so definitely an easier uh breakfast, easier immediate post-race plans next week. And fewer fewer ideas about the day. Yes, yes, Aileen. We did have we had lightning lanes. We did think we were gonna spend a good amount of time at Magic Kingdom, um, which was incredible. We're wrong about that. Wrong about that. Um I do wonder like if we had trained, if we would have been quite that sore, you know? You know, right? Yeah, so maybe that'll be interesting to see next time. But yeah, we did go over to Magic Kingdom, and I'm glad we did because we did have a nice dinner and it was a surprisingly yeah, surprisingly delightful dinner. Yeah, we went to be our guest. Um, and I really love the photos we got with our metal in front of the castle. Yes, that was fun, yes, for sure. Yeah, yeah, no, um, be our guest. I hadn't been since it was quick service breakfast. Right. Our waitress was also not amused by us, me in particular. She really did not her and Danielle, she was all enemies very funny, friends, but um the food was, I mean, perfect. I had my steak was great. Um and I like the vibe in there, and yeah, um, a couple of good drinks. Yeah, I thought for some reason, I thought someone had told me there's a two-drink maximum at the Magic Kingdom table service restaurants, but our waitress was like, You want another drink? You want another drink? I think they're happy to take your money most of the time if you're not being belligerent. Yes. So I had a French French 75 and a wine flight. Um, because you know I love a wine flight. I actually didn't love the wine flight, it was um uh like champagne, uh rose, and a red. It was three different kinds of kinds of wine, yeah, not like three different reds. Yeah, yeah. But yeah, after dinner we could get a glass of wine with my steak too, which I don't usually and didn't we get an extra drink after? I feel like we got a third drink, but I don't remember what it was. Yes, uh another I got another French 75, I think. I honestly don't remember. It's all about it. I think you did too, I'm pretty sure. Yeah. And then we hobbled our way out of the park. We did have a minivan because I had noted on my mad dash back to get my um souvenir shopping done when you went to I forget where you went. You went to the pool, maybe, and I just went to Magic Kingdom. I noted that the um all-star movies like bus location was a length, it was a distance you didn't want to do after doing the race of some kind. So we did a minivan for that too. Yeah, and I would do that all over again. Like if we did another race, I will just budget for minivanning and ubering around the rest of that day because it was totally, it was totally what we were to do. Yeah, yeah. Made a big difference, yeah, yeah. And then I was very pleasantly surprised Monday, I felt so much better. Like I was still sore, but I felt very significantly better than I did. Sunday afternoon, yeah. I was like, I'm worried we've done permanent damage. I know, I know. Especially because I'm used to like, if I like like for instance, this weekend I went, I hadn't been to the gym all week. I have just transitioned back to doing like barbell, like heavier weight for the first time in a year, almost a year, and so I I planned for like a two-hour gym visit and like going hard, and I did. And today I'm a little sore, but I know that tomorrow I'm going to be very sore. So day two is usually infinitely worse than day one, and so I was kind of like the amount of sore that I am now will double tomorrow and I will die. I will just suffer on fire. But actually, we woke up feeling fine. I did some stretching, like literally in bed. I did some stretching without even like getting up. Um and like it, I actually felt totally fine on Monday. My even my right hip, which is my cranky hip, uh was completely back to normal. I was really, really nervous about that. Right, that it was broken forever. Well, it's just I did so much damage to it before, and I've been so careful building back in, and like I just was like, shoot, did I just blow up a year's worth of training? Yeah. Like, but nope, it was it was fine. It was good. And we had a killer brunch. Oh, it wasn't even brunch, it was lunch. It was so good. Homecoming just never disappoints, never wrong, it's never the wrong idea. And that flight, oh my god. Yeah, we did them, we split the moonshine flight. I'm glad we split it because they were big, they were really big uh portions. It was five little glasses. I would have had a very different airport experience, I feel. As it was, I didn't have a great airport experience because I really didn't need the second drink we got at Jock Lindsay's. The first one was fine, the second one was an error. The walking beverage. We well, we just thought we we just thought that we had a much longer I so we didn't love our drinks at Jock Lindsay's, number one. The bar, it was very much like off the drink menu, and like the bartender kept messing up other people's drinks while she was making them and chatting with us.

SPEAKER_00

And I was like, Very funny, we messed this one up too, because it's not very good.

SPEAKER_01

It was not very good. But I like I just like it there, so that it was nice to stop in. But then they had a guy out front, they had the mobile bar out front, and we were like, Well, I mean, we gotta walk all the way back to the thing, let's just grab one because we didn't love the one we just had. So we grabbed one, and then the um the place where we were meant to catch the minivan was like directly there. Like there was no possible way for us to finish without a Herculean effort, which I didn't like about it. Except I did, I did drink it. I drink it, yes. Oh my god, I drank like half of mine, yes, and then I was like, oh boy, oh boy, that was too much. Um yeah, and then we went back. I took a dip in the pool. Well, Danielle had to leave, which was so sad. I had to leave. Sadly, her flight was a little earlier than mine, and I would have gone with her if we were in the same terminal, but we weren't, so there was really no point in heading over early. Um, so I took a little dip in the pool, um, which was lovely, but would have been more fun if you were there. And then I headed to the airport. Um, my Uber driver used to live in the town I live in in Massachusetts, which was very funny. Wait, did we talk about this? I feel like I didn't know that. Yeah, he initially moved to Quincy and then he lived in my town for a while. So funny. Such a small world, yeah. So strange. Yeah, like two blocks away from where I live. No way. Yeah, that's crazy. Um, and then I went to the airport. I went to I had a pass for the United Lounge, uh, like zero out of 10 stars for the United Lounge. It was very drab in there, like it was there wasn't a lot of light. Um it was just kind of like a very basic drink menu. Like I think I got like a vodka soda or something like that. And the food selections were terrible. Like I think I had I had like a little mini cupcake and a slice of cheese. And they were like, you know, store-bought Shah's cupcakes. It was it was really nothing to raid home about. Luckily, it the day pass was super cheap, so I didn't care. But um, yeah, definitely not um not worth it, not worth it. Yeah, I got to the airport, it was all very quick. I mean, TSA pre-check was so fast, like everything was just easy peasy, and I just got through and found myself at the you know, like long skinny bar where we got the mimosas last time. Yes, yeah, I just went and sat down there and I had some work to do, so I just pulled out my laptop and just hung out till it was like time to board and and it was an easy peasy flight, no problem.

SPEAKER_00

And yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, they they kept saying our flight would be bumpy, and they even had the flight attendant sit down at one point for a couple of minutes, but it was really not bumpy um at all, which was great. It might have been like the seven drinks, I'm not sure. It it it's possible, it could have been that he is possible it was that, but no, it was it was fine, and um then my baby was waiting for me when I landed, which was so funny. Yeah, yeah, I got picked up at the airport, which was a special treat. I don't usually get picked up, so that was really nice.

SPEAKER_00

And then special work the next morning.

SPEAKER_01

It was it was a great trip, it was a little snack-sized trip, yep. Um, with like a little bit of a giant race in the middle of it. In the middle. Hey, we did it. Uh we did it, and I was it was really cute. My work people were like very invested whether or not I finished this race. So everybody was like very excited about it when I came in the next morning, which was cute. So that was really nice. Um, and yeah, I kind of want to wear the medal everywhere and just be like, oh hi, I'm a runner. Oh, this is my medal for the race. I won. I won it. I won it. Um, yeah, and we we have our eyeballs on the princess half marathon. Um, we'll see, we'll see what happens. But I think what we should try to do is in the meantime target some like cute little 5k maybe little 1010. Yes, for sure. Actually, train for this one. What? You actually want to train for this one? Well, like, I don't really want to train train. I want to do like little like little bites of training. I don't want to mess with my regular. I am adding some cardio back in. That was already part of my plan for after the race is that I'm gonna Wednesday mornings is the worst morning at the gym every week. It's full of randos. I don't know why none of my normal people are there. Everybody's doing nonsense. And so Wednesday mornings are the worst at the gym. And if everyone else that goes every day gets to take a rest day on Wednesday, I'm going to take a rest day on Wednesday. What I'm gonna do instead is do like a Pilates or bar class that night. Okay. And so I think if I can do something cardio heavy maybe twice a week, um that would be good. So I was kind of already planning on doing that, but that would really that would help race-wise for sure. Yes. So I don't really want to mess with my like current training plan, but I think like doing like a 5k every couple of months, or maybe we do the devil's chase in Salem, which is 6.66 miles, like just start making it a normal thing we do and not like training a ton extra. Yeah, I think that's a good idea. That's reasonable. Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Um races now, I guess. We are this is our thing. This is now a thing that we do. I didn't mean to do it, but here we are. Here we are. It was so much fun. It was great. It was so much fun. I was very proud of us for there's a mental component to running that I didn't really know anything about. Yeah, you know, and it is similar to like weight training, I guess. It just takes longer. Right, you know, so long. So long.
